Protecting the human dignity of migrants
Please take a minute to sign our petition in solidarity with the bishops of Iowa and Pope Francis, who see the migrant as not simply a brother or sister in need, but “Christ himself, who knocks at our door.” The petition invites us to support the human dignity of migrants.
The courts have stopped enforcement of the state’s new “illegal re-entry” law for now.
U.S. Supreme Court fails to affirm human dignity
The U.S. bishops have long advocated for federal investments in safe, decent, and affordable housing along with homelessness services.
In response to a recent Supreme Court decision in City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson, et al., the chair of the U.S. bishops’ committee on domestic justice, Archbishop Borys Gudziak, said “policies that criminalize homelessness are a direct contradiction of our call to shelter those experiencing homelessness and care for those in need.”
The Court ruled it constitutional to arrest or fine individuals experiencing homelessness for resting or shielding themselves from the elements in a public place even when no safe shelter is available. The USCCB filed an amicus curiae brief in the case.
