Iowans choose candidates
More than 400,000 Iowans voted in the primary election earlier this week, making up about 19% of registered voters. In a close race, Zach Lahn won the Republican nomination for governor over Rep. Randy Feenstra. Lahn had 80,338 votes to Feenstra’s 79,113. State Auditor Rob Sand is the Democratic nominee.
State Representative Josh Turek was nominated by the Democrats for the open U.S. Senate seat. He will oppose Republican Ashley Hinson, currently serving as a member of Congress for Iowa’s Second District. Sen. Joni Ernst is retiring.
Election Day is Nov. 3.

Call on Congress to ensure that immigration enforcement respects human dignity
While Congress negotiates the Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the chairmen of the USCCB’s Committee for Religious Liberty and Committee on Migration sent a letter articulating the bishops’ concerns and requests regarding issues at the intersection of immigration enforcement and religious freedom.
The bishops urged Congress to demonstrate its support for religious liberty on a bipartisan basis by (1) ensuring respect for what are commonly referred to as sensitive locations, especially houses of worship, and (2) mandating consistent access to religious and pastoral services for all immigration detainees.
